Editor's Note

Hi,

Well, what can I say about August in Arizona - HOT! I guess that should be no surprise, but natives of the area tell me this has been one of the hottest summers on record. It's been so hot, even in the morning, that I stopped walking outside and started using my recumbent bike to get my aerobic exercise.

Not too much going on. Because of my martial arts background, I have been asked to teach a stage combat class for local middle schoolers. I have never taught anything like this, but it sounds like fun. I'll let you know how it is going next month (the class runs for 5 weeks).

Here's a little plug for my book. If you haven't checked it out yet, go to my sales page and find out what my book package includes. Here's a link to the page . . .

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

If you're looking to find the key to the Universe, I have some bad news and some good news.

The bad news is: there is no key.

The good news is: it isn't locked!!!

Feature Article: 7 Excuses For Not Exercising

There are a myriad of excuses that people use to convince themselves why they can't exercise. Here are seven of them, and some tips to offset them.

1. It's too hot outside. This is one that comes up frequently here in Arizona. Consider getting out earlier in the morning. Try an exercycle or a treadmill. If you do go outside when it is hot, make sure to wear light colored, sweat absorbing clothes, and stay hydrated.

2. I don't have time. This has been a favorite for years. You need to make exercise a priority. Pencil it in to your calendar. Get up earlier and work out before breakfast. If you can get an hour of exercise in all at one time (this is the amount of daily exercise recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine), break it down in to smaller segments. Take the stairs at work. Park a few blocks away form work and walk the rest of the way. Use half of your lunch time for a brisk walk.

3. I don't like it. Today, there are so many options for exercise that it is hard to believe that you won't be able to find something you like and will stick with. Also, consider cross training - alternating different forms of exercise each day. Find a friend with whom you can work out, everything is more fun with a friend.

4. I'm too overweight. Exercise to help you lose weight should be a priority for over weight people. Obesity is a very big health hazard. If you are embarrassed because of your weight, find exercises you can do at home until you feel more comfortable.

5. I have an injury. Check with a physical therapist to see what alternative exercises you can do until you heal. If it;s a permanent injury alternatives are still the way to go. There is always something you can do to be more physically active on a regular basis.

6. I'm not motivated. Write down some positive reasons why you should be exercising and put the list somewhere you will see it every day. Some possible reasons may include; to live longer, to feel better, to set an example for my family.

7. I don't know how. Pretty much everyone knows how to walk, run, and bike. These are excellent forms of aerobic exercise. For weight training you may want to consider getting a personal trainer to show how to properly lift weights so you don't injure yourself.

If you want to live a relatively healthy life, you need to consider exercise as a necessary component. Learn how to fit it into your daily routine, and realize that you should be exercising for the rest of your life. Exercise is not a temporary thing you will do for a short while until you are "in shape". Exercise should be a lifetime activity.

    YogaDirect.com

As the name implies, this site specializes in equipment used for yoga. They have excellent prices, and sell some very good exercise mats, along with other helpful equipment, books and videos.

PowerSystems.com This is another site similar to Perform Better. They have a great variety of exercise equipment that you may find difficult to get at regular stores.

    Shoebuy.com

I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that fit me right (weird foot problems), but this site often works for me. They not only have very competitive prices and a great variety of shoes, but they offer f.r.e.e shipping and f.r.e.e returns.

    Buy.com

This site really has little to do with fitness or nutrition, but it is one of my favorite sites. They carry everything from electronics to books. Their prices are some of the most competitive on the internet, and they often offer free shipping. If I am looking to buy almost anything, I check them out first. This link is only for US and Canadian buyers.

    Buy.com

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visable, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
