Editor's Note

Hi,

Here we go again. The months are flying by.

Summer is my favorite time of year. Here in the desert southwest it can get a little warm, but I still enjoy the bright sunshine and being able to get out and enjoy nature. Because of the heat, it makes more sense to get out early in the day to avoid the heat of the day. The other day on the news they said this may be the hottest summer on record for the Phoenix area. That would probably mean multiple days with temperatures in excess of 120 F !!! That's too hot even for a sun worshiper like me.

Those kinds of temperatures will definitely cause my wife to push even harder for us to become "snow birds". Actually, we have taken our first big step toward making that happen. We just bought a small manufactured home in a 55+ community near us. Now all we have to do is sell our big house so we can get a second home near our family in the Chicago land area.

Speaking of unusual weather. . . I was on a business trip up to Calgary, Alberta, CA last week and they had 5 inches of snow on May 24th! That is definitely not my kind of climate.

This month I'm writing about the importance of stretching. This was triggered by something that I observed during the warm up session of my martial arts class last week. The son of one of my students recently started taking classes with me. During warm ups, I noticed that he couldn't perform some of the simple stretches very well. In talking with him I found that he doesn't participate in any sports or other regular form of exercise. As a 16 year old boy, he couldn't stretch as well as me (at 61) or my assistant instructor (age 55). This made me think about how important and useful regular stretching can be for us at any age. But, since we become less flexible as we get older, it is even more important as we age.

As I mentioned last month, I am in the process of writing my eBook. It will cover lots of great information on the whats, whys, and hows around sensible exercise for mature adults (primarily baby boomers). My special report - "Tips and Tactics to Improve Your Quality of Life with Exercise", is available free for the asking, just send me an email. It covers similar topics, but in much less detail – it's just a teaser for the eBook. I'm also shaping up my on line coaching site. On it I will be offering individual, customized guidance on putting together your initial exercise plan and helping you with motivation, focus, and incremental progress ideas for ongoing exercise success. You, will be the first to learn when this service is up and running.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

Your chances of being run over are doubled if you stay in the middle of the road.

Feature Article - Why Stretch As We Get Older?
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

There is some controversy over the benefits of stretching to prevent exercise injuries. That point aside, there are a number of benefits that make stretching worth considering as a part of your overall physical fitness routine, especially as we age. Here are some of them:

  • When we are stressed, one thing that happens is that our muscles become tense. Stretching can help relax tense muscles.

  • As we age, balance can become an issue in our everyday routines. Since stretching improves the range of motion of your joints, it can help you to be more mobile and less prone to injuries from falls.

  • Stretching can increase your flexibility, which can help you to perform daily tasks more easily.

  • Since stretching helps increase blood flow, it can improve your circulation.

  • And, the controversial one, stretching may help prevent injury. This is especially true as we age and our muscles and joints often become tighter. A little stretching helps to improve our range of motion, which may keep us from being injured by pulling a muscle.

And what are some of the rules of stretching?

  • Warm up first.

  • Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. If you can't hold it that long initially, work your way up to it.

  • Don't bounce.

  • Relax and don't hold your breath while you stretch.

Stretching has enough benefits that you should consider making it a part of your daily routine, even on days when you're not planing on exercising. Do it for 10 to 15 minutes every day and you will start to feel the benefits in a very short time.

    Questions and Answers

Question – Why Can't I Seem To Lose Weight?

Answer - In order to lose weight, we have to do several things in concert. We have to make sure we are eating the right kinds of foods (lots of vegetables, fruits, complex carbs, and some proteins at each meal). We must watch the size of the portions of food we eat. And, we have to exercise regularly (that means just about every day). If you're not losing weight, chances are very strong that you aren't doing at least one of these things consistently.

    Other Services and Information

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visble, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
