Editor's Note

Hi,

Today is a very special day. It is my wife Barbara's birthday. Happy birthday sweetie!

Well, Spring is starting to poke its’ head out around the country.  At least some parts of the country.  Here in Arizona the weather is absolutely perfect – 40’s and 50’s at night, and up into the low 80’s during the day.  I received pictures from my son back in Chicago showing my two grandsons playing in about 12 inches of snow on Easter weekend, so I guess Spring hasn’t quite reached parts of the mid-West.

I was still recovering during March from my lower back problems.  I started going to a husband and wife team of chiropractors.  My back is feeling much better now. I am finally able to start getting back to my regular exercise routine.

Speaking of regular exercise routines . . . Spring is a time when many of us think about restarting the exercise routines that we let slip during the winter for various reasons. Because of that, I thought this might be an appropriate time to remind everyone of some of the do’s and don’ts of starting or restarting a sensible exercise program.  You can read my article below.  And don’t forget to check out my library of back articles at my web site to see if any of that information can help be of help to you.

Reminder - I still have a few spots open in my on line fitness coaching group.  Just go to  my coaching site to check things out.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.

Feature Article - Baby Boomer Do's and Don'ts for Starting/Restarting a Sensible Exercise Routine
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

As mature adults we often find it very challenging to start or restart an exercise program. Sometimes we think we can just jump into the same routine we did years ago. Or, we try to convince ourselves that we're just too old to start exercising. Both of these attitudes can cause us to have problems and/or not get the benefits that come with exercising at any age.

Here are some do's and don'ts that will help you get started, or restarted in the right direction.

Do's

  • Make sure you assess your current fitness level, or have it assessed, before you start an exercise program.
  • Plan for and write down some specific fitness goals.
  • Make sure your level and amount of exercise are safe and sensible for you.
  • Warm up/cool down and stretch before and after you exercise.
  • Vary your exercise routine to keep it interesting and to challenge your body more.
  • Try to make sure you eat a well balanced diet.
  • Work out with a friend to help keep you motivated.

    Don'ts

  • Set unrealistic goals.
  • Exercise only once in a while.
  • Skip stretching before and after exercising.
  • Exercise too much.
  • Forget to occasionally reward yourself.
  • Compare what your doing or not doing to others.
  • Ever give up on yourself and your goals.

It is important that you remain mentally flexible. You will probably come upon challenges that you may not have contemplated. By keeping an open mind, being dedicated and using some creativity you can begin to enjoy the many benefits that regular exercise has to offer to people of any age.

    Questions and Answers

Question – How many times a day should I be eating if I want to control my weight?

Answer - Believe it or not, you can best control your weight by eating more meals rather than less. Five or six meals a day works best for most people. Keep in mind that all of these meals shouldn't be full meals. If you are trying lose weight, you should eat a breakfast, lunch and dinner of no more than 500 calories each plus 2 or 3 snacks of about 100 calories each. These numbers are just an example, the actual total calories you eat in a day should be determined by your sex, current weight, and planned amount of daily exercise. Between eating and exercise you should try to set up a calorie deficit of 800 to 1,000 calories a day. This will allow you to lose about 1 to 2 pounds each week.

    Other Services and Information

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visble, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
