Editor's Note

Hi,

I hope everyone is doing well.

Happy birthday sweetheart! No, not you. Today is my wife's birthday. Her age? It's not my place to tell, but she is a little younger than I am. I took her out for lunch today because she has exercise class this evening. After all, priorities are important at our age.

My son's 39 th birthday was a few weeks ago, and my daughter's 43 rd is coming up in early May.

The majority of my note today is going to be about all the new affiliate marketing partners I've joined up with recently. In case you don't know what “affiliate marketing partners” are, let me explain. As you might imagine, in order to keep my web site and this newsletter going, it helps if I can get something for my time, efforts, and knowledge. One of the most common ways for a web publisher to do that is by placing ads on their web site pages and in their newsletter. I haven't done much of that to date, but now that I'm officially retired from the corporate rat race, I thought it might be nice to try to supplement my social security income with some income from my site.

As I've developed my site and researched all the topics that I write about on it's pages and in my newsletter, I have also been researching sites I can partner with that offer useful, good quality products at good prices. I look for sites that offer products that I think my readers will find useful in their pursuit of both physical fitness and good nutrition. The sites I am listing below are some of the best sites I have been able to find that meet those criteria.

The way this works is, I put up banner ads from my affiliate marketing partners. If you see a site you think might have something you could use, you just click on the banner and check it out. If you find something you like and you buy it from them, then I get a small commission. If you don't see anything you want or need, that's OK too. I'm placing these site banners in order to make it easier for you to find good equipment and other products. My hope is that you will check out these sites if and when you need something, so that we can both benefit from them. After this newsletter, I will be placing these banners in the “other services and information” section at the bottom of future newsletters and also on appropriate pages within my web site. Please click on my banner ads to go to these sites so I can get credit for the referal. If you don't get this newsletter in HTML and the banners just show up as underlined hyperlinks, please make sure you copy and paste the entire address to get to the site, otherwise you may get an error message and no page.

So, here are some sites you might want to check out:

Buy.com This site really has little to do with fitness or nutrition, but it is one of my favorite sites. They carry everything from electronics to books. Their prices are some of the most competitive on the internet, and they often offer free shipping. If I am looking to buy almost anything, I check them out first. This link is only for US and Canadian buyers.

Buy.com

Shoebuy.com I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that fit me right (weird foot problems), but this site often works for me. They not only have very competitive prices and a great variety of shoes, but they offer f.r.e.e shipping and f.r.e.e returns.

PerformBetter.com This site offers all kinds of exercise and rehab equipment. They have exercise bands, balls, mats, foam rolls, weights, and all kinds of other equipment. If you need any kind of exercise aids, this site is definitely worth looking at

YogaDirect.com As the name implies, this site specializes in equipment used for yoga. They have excellent prices, and sell some very good exercise mats, along with other helpful equipment, books and videos.

PowerSystems.com This is another site similar to Perform Better. They have a great variety of exercise equipment that you may find difficult to get at regular stores.

FootSolutions.com This site is tends to specialize more in orthotics and other foot aids as well as speialty shoes for people with foot problems.

Foot Solutions: Better Health Through Your Feet

ActiveForever.com This site has equipment that is more medically based. It may be a good alternative if you're looking for physical therapy equipment or other things that a medical person may have recommended.

50 Athletes Over 50 This is a great new book written by Don McGrath, PhD, in which he interviews 50 people over the age of 50 who have maintained or developed incredible levels of fitness after the age of 50. I had a chance to preview this book before it came out in March. It is truly inspiring. And, it shows what can be done by people of any age if they put their minds to it. The regular price is $29.95, but it is being offered right now for $24.95. Or you can get it for the Kindle for $9.95.

I hope you find these sites useful. If anyone has another type of site you would like me to research, let me know. I will be continuing to check out other sites as needed.

Here's to a happy and healthy new year.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

Work is good, but it's not that important.

Feature Article - How to Double Your Odds of Seeing 85
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

So what do boomers need to do, not to just survive to 85, but to live healthy lives into old age?

According to the latest research, we need to be physically active in middle age. The research shows that if you are fit in mid-life, you can double your chance of surviving to 85. if you're not fit in your 50's, your projected life span is eight years shorter than if you are fit. Actually, the combination of being physically fit, not smoking, and having low blood pressure is a strong predictor of longevity.

Unfortunately, Americans tend to participate in less physical activity and are less fit each year after about age 50. Our national guidelines recommend that Americans get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week. Some examples of moderate exercise for getting and staying in shape are:

  • walking at a 4mph pace
  • doubles tennis
  • ballroom dancing
  • bicycling at least 10 mph

If you haven't been doing these things as often as is suggested, don't feel like all is lost yet. The studies suggest the biggest benefit from exercise occurs when people go from a sedentary lifestyle to getting regular exercise. So, start reading my earlier newsletters and checking out the information on my web site. There is still hope for you. But remember my motto “If not now, when?”.

    Questions and Answers

Question – As a woman, how much exercise do I need to do to maintain a healthy weight while consuming a normal, healthy diet?

Answer - A new study, just published in the March 24 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that woman need more than the current federal guidelines of 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times per week in order to maintain a normal weight. It looks like 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day or 30 minutes of intense exercise every day are needed to keep a woman from gaining weight. If you are over weight, you will also have to reduce your calorie intake. Sorry ladies!

    Other Services and Information

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visable, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.

    ---------------------------------------------------

If you want (or need) an eating plan that can help you be successful in learning to eat properly and attain your weight loss goal, I suggest you take a look at Nutrisystem.
