Editor's Note

Hi,

It looks like the holiday season has snuck up on us once again. It seems like it was just a few weeks ago when we were talking about the end of summer, and now Thanksgiving is over and we're looking at plans for the holidays.

My wife and I go home to Chicago twice a year to visit our family and friends back there. And, this is one of those times. I have to admit that as much as I love to get home and see my kids and grandchildren, winter is definitely not my favorite season in the midwest.

With the holidays upon us, most of us can look forward to gaining a few extra pounds. This is the time of year when you see all kinds of articles on what not to eat during the party season to help you stave off some of those unwanted pounds. In contrast, my main article today will focus on the foods you can and should be eating.

I hope you have a great holiday season and a good start to the new year.

Reminder - I still have a few spots open in my on line fitness coaching group.  Just go to  my coaching site to check things out.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Feature Article - Eating During the Holidays
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

Just about everyone likes the holidays. It's a time when we get together to enjoy being with friends and family.

One of the challenges we have during this time of year is gaining unwanted pounds because of all the foods that we should be staying away from, or at least watching the quantities we eat more closely.

Rather than telling you about all the things you shouldn't be eating, I'm going to give you a few simple ideas you can use to eat more sensibly.

First of all, if you're going to a party, plan to eat a sensible snack before going so you're not as tempted to eat everything you see when you get there. Just like going food shopping on an empty stomach is not a good idea, the same thing holds true for parties.

Secondly, as adults, we should be able to exercise some level of self control when it comes to eating at a party. It's not like you're going to be there forever and never see a regular meal again. Try to practice some self control on portion sizes if nothing else. Instead of filling a big plate with multiples of all the foods you just have to have, take a smaller plate and only take one each of the foods that are really your favorites that you don't get to eat very often. And don't stand near the snack table. Get you plate, take what you want, and go somewhere else.

If you practice eating a nutritious diet on a regular basis, you're chances of “needing” or even wanting all the junk food served at parties will be diminished. You'll look at all the junk and say to yourself - “do I really want to put this garbage in my body after all the good I've been doing by following a healthy, sensible diet?”. This psychological factor can go a long way to helping you resist party foods at this time of year.

And, here is a list of some of the heart healthy foods you should be eating on a regular basis. Almonds, bananas, blueberries, barley, chicken breasts, kidney beans, oatmeal, peanut butter, pork loin, salmon, sardines, turkey breast, tuna, walnuts, and white fish, just to name a few. If you see snacks made with any of these ingredients, they will be better for you than all the cheeses, spreads, and dips that are usually offered at parties.

By sticking to these few simple tactics, you can save yourself a lot of extra dieting and exercising after the start of the new year. And your body will thank you for it with less indigestion and sleepless nights.

    Other Services and Information

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visble, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
