Editor's Note

Hi,

For most of us, summer has pretty much started. Here in the desert southwest we have finally had a 100+ degree day. That's pretty unusual for us. By the beginning of June we would normally have had at least several 100+ days by now. No complaining though. The hot weather will come soon enough.

This is a favorite time of year for my wife and I. Starting in mid May, there are several arts and craft shows up in Prescott each month through September. We have gone to two already, and there's another one in two weeks. It's not just the fairs that we like. Going up to Prescott is a treat in itself. The area is really beautiful with all the pine forests surrounding a very nice town in the mountains.

Over the past month, I have been researching several different diet and exercise programs that have become popular recently. Two of them are definitely designed more for the “younger” set. The diet sections are OK, but the exercise portions are brutal for us mature individuals. Even those who may be in reasonably good shape. The two “tough” programs I'm referring to are P90X, and Extreme Fat Loss Diet. You can find plenty of information on each of them by doing a search, but as I said, I don't recommend them for baby boomers and beyond. I'm still researching another one. I'll let you know more about it soon.

This month my main article deals with eating more often to lose fat and/or weight. I hope you enjoy it.

And, don't forget to check out my affiliate marketing partner banner ads which can be found at the bottom of my newsletter each month in the “other services and information” section and also on appropriate pages within my web site.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

Life is largely a matter of expectations.

Feature Article - One Of The Best Ways I Know To Lose Body Fat
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

When you're dieting, how often do you eat each day? Once? Twice? Three times? I know many people, when dieting, will skip breakfast, eat a very small lunch, and then have dinner. Eating a lower amount of calories each day won't necessarily help you to lose weight.

You may ask - Why won't eating fewer calories in a day help me lose weight? There are two reasons that usually come into play when we try to lose weight by reducing our daily caloric intake. One, by reducing our caloric intake, we are signaling our bodies that we may be going into a starvation mode. In this case, your body will try to protect you by storing more of the calories as fat for later use. Second, when you reduce your daily caloric intake, you are setting yourself up for failure. If you don't take in enough calories, you may not have enough energy to perform you daily activities. Also, dramatically reducing your calorie intake will make you feel constantly hungry, and you will only be able to deal with this deprivation for a short time before you revert to your “old ways”.

Believe it or not, eating more frequently than three times a day may help you to lose more body fat and weight. Now, before you go off gorging yourself on five, six, or more meals a day, be forewarned that this doesn't work for everyone. Sorry about that.

When doesn't it work? If your physical activity levels are low or non-existent, eating more frequently may increase you daily caloric intake with no outlet for burning it off. The cold, hard truth is that you have to set up a calorie deficit (more calories out than in) in order to lose weight. Basically, you have to burn 3,500 extra calories in order to lose one pound.

Now you may be confused. I just said in the previous paragraph that eating more often may help you lose more body fat and/or weight. That's true, it can. But (don't you hate that word?), it depends on several factors. If you eat more often, you still have to come up with a calorie deficit. The best way to do that is to start exercising, or exercise more.

Here are some of the benefits of eating more often that can help you lose weight:

  • You will have more energy to exercise harder.
  • You will keep from getting hungry, thereby helping to keep you from overeating.
  • There will be less swings in your blood sugar levels, which can help keep you from being unhappy, lethargic, and cranky.
  • Coupled with regular exercise, it can raise you metabolism.

So, what do you need to be doing for this magic to work for you?

  • Make sure you are eating the proper amount of calories for your age, sex, and activity level.(remember - calories in versus calories out)
  • Split your eating up into five or six meals and/or snacks.
  • Make sure you eat a good breakfast to get you going in the morning.
  • Include strength training in you weekly exercise routine to help build muscle (muscle is more metabolically active than fat, which means it will help burn more calories pound for pound).

Give it a try. Eat more often. Exercise regularly. And watch the fat disappear.

    Questions and Answers

Question – How is old age defined?

Answer - Biological age is usually defined as follows – middle age 45-64; young old 65-74; old 75-84; old old 85-99; and oldest old 100+ (I'm shooting for “oldest old”). Functional age, on the other hand, refers to an individual's functional fitness level – how much and what type of physical activity can a person perform. Psychological age includes factors such as memory, self-esteem, and ability to learn.

    Other Services and Information

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visable, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.

    Buy.com

This site really has little to do with fitness or nutrition, but it is one of my favorite sites. They carry everything from electronics to books. Their prices are some of the most competitive on the internet, and they often offer free shipping. If I am looking to buy almost anything, I check them out first. This link is only for US and Canadian buyers.

    Buy.com

    Shoebuy.com

I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that fit me right (weird foot problems), but this site often works for me. They not only have very competitive prices and a great variety of shoes, but they offer f.r.e.e shipping and f.r.e.e returns.

    PerformBetter.com

This site offers all kinds of exercise and rehab equipment. They have exercise bands, balls, mats, foam rolls, weights, and all kinds of other equipment. If you need any kind of exercise aids, this site is definitely worth looking at

    YogaDirect.com

As the name implies, this site specializes in equipment used for yoga. They have excellent prices, and sell some very good exercise mats, along with other helpful equipment, books and videos.

PowerSystems.com This is another site similar to Perform Better. They have a great variety of exercise equipment that you may find difficult to get at regular stores.

    FootSolutions.com

This site tends to specialize more in orthotics and other foot aids as well as speialty shoes for people with foot problems.

Foot Solutions: Better Health Through Your Feet

    ActiveForever.com

This site has equipment that is more medically based. It may be a good alternative if you're looking for physical therapy equipment or other things that a medical person may have recommended.

    50 Athletes Over 50

This is a great new book written by Don McGrath, PhD, in which he interviews 50 people over the age of 50 who have maintained or developed incredible levels of fitness after the age of 50. I had a chance to preview this book before it came out in March. It is truly inspiring. And, it shows what can be done by people of any age if they put their minds to it. The regular price is $29.95, but it is being offered right now for $24.95. Or you can get it for the Kindle for $9.95.
