Editor's Note

Hi,

Well, it seems like I just wrote my last newsletter. Oh, I guess I did, since I was late getting the last issue out. This time I'm right on the money.

My wife, Barb, and I spent about ten days in Chicago visiting with family and friends. We got to spend a lot of quality time with our newest grand child, Elisabeth Anne. That was lots of fun. I even had the pleasure of having her fall asleep on my shoulder for over an hour. Why is that babies always smell so nice? Except, when they have a full diaper.

Anyway, the trip was good. We spent time with both of our kids and all 5 of our grandchildren. We also got to see both of sisters, as well as some good friends. But, the weather was hot and humid. Typical of August in Chicago. People like to tease us about our “dry heat” in the desert, but it is definitely better to have 105 with 10 percent humidity than 90 with 95 percent humidity.

This month, in my main article, I will be talking about obesity in the U.S. This is a major health concern, and it is getting worse.

I was looking at my visitor statistics at my various affiliate sites the other day. It seems that not very many of you are taking advantage of the products and services that are offered by these sites. Believe me, you won't find any better sites to get exercise, fitness, and nutritional products and services. Yes, I get a finders fee if you buy anything from them, but I know they have great services and products because I buy things from them on a regular basis myself. You really owe it to yourself to check these sites out. They are all listed at the bottom of this newsletter. If you find any other good sites that offer this type of products or services, let me know. I will check them out and add them to my list if they seem to offer high quality, affordable products or services that deal with fitness, exercise, or weight loss for mature people.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer, but wish we didn't.

Feature Article - The Obesity Epidemic in the U.S.
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

How do we define obesity? Obesity is defined as having a body-mass index (BMI) - a calculation based on height and weight - above 30. For a 5 foot 5 inch person, that would be 180 pounds or more. A BMI of 18 to 25 is considered healthy. And a BMI of 25 to 30 is considered overweight. You can find more information on BMI and how to calculate it at my web page - Guidelines For Measuring Fitness Levels - http://www.fitness-after-50.com/measuringfitnesslevels.html.

In a report released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on 3 August, 2010, they found that only one state, Colorado, along with Washington, DC had an obesity rate below 20 percent. And nine states had an obesity rate over 30 percent, with Mississippi at almost 35 percent. In 2000, 28 states had rates below 20 percent, and none was over 30 percent. The overall findings of the report were that almost 27 percent of adults in the U.S. are obese, while the number in 2000 was under 20 percent.

The CDC said that the overall obesity rate today is probably much higher than the report indicates because the study relied on telephone surveys with 400,000 adults who were asked to self-report their height and weight. This is information that people often misrepresent. In an earlier study from 2009 the CDC found, through actual measurements among 5,555 adults, that national obesity levels are 33.8 percent, with 32.2 percent for men and 35.5 percent for women.

The report also indicated that obesity levels are most prevalent in adults aged 50 – 59 at 31.1 percent, with a rate of 30.9 percent for adults aged 60 – 69. the rate for adults who didn't graduate from high school was 32.9 percent while it was 20.8 percent among people with a college degree.

I know, I know, it's a lot of numbers. So what? Well, if you are one of the 1 in 3 adults who is in the obese category, you potentially have some very serious health issues that may be headed your way, if they aren't already affecting you. Obesity is known to contribute to several of the leading causes of death. These include heart disease, stroke, and type two diabetes.

If you are lucky enough to have avoided all of these health issues, but you are obese, you are just a statistic waiting to happen. You need to start exercising and adjusting your diet in order to get down to a healthy weight. That won't guarantee immunity to these ailments, but it will sure help. And, if you already have one or more of these conditions, then you really need to get with your health care provider to figure out what you can do to modify your life style to reduce the effects of these conditions.

If you don't already know this, diet and exercise that helps you get into the healthy weight range can do wonders to minimize the effects of many conditions caused by or exasperated by being overweight. So don't delay. Your health, and maybe even your life, might depend on it.

Questions and Answers

Question – If I'm not overweight, but I have a big belly, will this cause me any increased health risks?

Answer - Yes. People with the biggest waist lines have twice the risk of dying.

    50 Athletes Over 50

This is a great new book written by Don McGrath, PhD, in which he interviews 50 people over the age of 50 who have maintained or developed incredible levels of fitness after the age of 50. I had a chance to preview this book before it came out in March. It is truly inspiring. And, it shows what can be done by people of any age if they put their minds to it. The regular price is $29.95, but it is being offered right now for $24.95. Or you can get it for the Kindle for $9.95.

    Buy.com

This site really has little to do with fitness or nutrition, but it is one of my favorite sites. They carry everything from electronics to books. Their prices are some of the most competitive on the internet, and they often offer free shipping. If I am looking to buy almost anything, I check them out first. This link is only for US and Canadian buyers.

    Buy.com

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visable, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
