Editor's Note

Hi,

As usual, I like to talk about the weather. Here in Arizona right now, that is quite simple – It's HOT !!!! We have finally hit our summer stride. We have been experiencing daily highs around 105 – 112 degrees with the nights “cooling” down to 85. And, for the 4 th of July weekend, our air conditioning went out! That was fun. Now, we are getting ready to get into our “monsoon” season. That means lots of rain and humidity. So our standard line of “it's a dry heat” goes right out the window.

I have two trips coming up in the next few weeks. The first full weekend of August, myself and three of my aikido students are heading out to northern California for the bi-annual national tournament and seminars for the Tomiki Aikido of the Americas organization which I belong to. This will be a first for two of my students, so they are very excited. I have been to many of these events, but I still enjoy attending them. For me, it's like a family reunion. I have known many of the regular attendees for well over 20 years. We “old timers” are the senior black belts in the organization, and we always enjoy seeing what the new crop of students and young black belts look like from around the U.S. I also enjoy acting as a judge and referee for the various events.

My second trip, is in the middle of August. My wife and I are heading home to Chicago for the birth of our fifth grandchild. This will be our son's third child and his first girl. She is due to present herself some time around the end of July. That's why we have scheduled our trip for mid August, so we'll be sure she's there.

This month my main article addresses a study that explores the relationship of walking a reduction of the frequency of strokes in mature women. I hope you find it useful.

And, don't forget to check out my affiliate marketing partner banner ads which can be found at the bottom of my newsletter each month in the “other services and information” section and also on appropriate pages within my web site.

Good luck, keep exercising, and remember – "If not now, when?".

Best Wishes,

Tom Manfredi

Food for Thought

Worry does not prevent disaster, it prevents joy.

Feature Article - Something Every Mature Woman Needs To Know
by Thomas D. Manfredi, MS

Are you a woman 54 years old or older? Do you exercise regularly? Are you thinking about starting an exercise program, but you're not sure what kind of exercise is best for you? Here's a hint - try walking.

Why walking? Well, there are many reasons why walking can be beneficial for your health. A recent 12 year follow-up study of over 39,000 woman with an average age of 54 has found that those women who walked for two or more hours per week had a significantly lower risk of stroke than non-walkers. And those women who walked briskly* had an even lower risk of stroke than the women who didn't walk.

Here are some of the statistics from this study (published recently in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association) :

When being compared to women who didn't walk;

Women who walked two or more hours per week had:

  • a 30 percent lower risk for any type of stroke
  • a 57 percent lower risk for bleeding strokes, and
  • a 21 percent lower risk for clot-related strokes.

And, women who walked briskly* for two or more hours per week had even better results:

  • a 37 percent lower risk for any type of stroke
  • a 25 percent lower risk for clot-related strokes, and
  • a 68 percent lower risk for bleeding strokes.

In this study, the various paces for walking were categorized in the following manner:

  • up to 2 mph = casual walking
  • 2 to 3 mph = normal walking
  • * 3 to 4 mph = brisk walking*
  • over 4 mph = very brisk walking

A brisk walking pace can usually be determined by the “talk” test. If you can talk normally you are probably walking at a “normal” pace. If you have difficulty talking, then you are probably walking at a “brisk” pace. And, if you have a lot of trouble talking, because you are trying to catch your breath, then you are probably walking at a “very brisk” pace.

This study looked most specifically at the effect walking had on strokes and various stroke subtypes. But, the study did address other forms of physical activity as well. It was determined that the women who were most active in their leisure time activities were 17 percent less likely to have any type of stroke compared to the least active women.

Keep in mind that the American Heart Association recommends that, for substantial health benefits, all adults should perform at least 150 minutes (2 1 /2 hours) per week of moderate intensity (like brisk walking) aerobic physical activity.

Also, the study did not specifically clarify how walking affects stroke risk in men. Sorry, guys.

    Questions and Answers

Question – Is there really a difference in eating brown rice versus white rice?

Yes. Brown rice is the unrefined form of white rice. That means that the outer shell has not been removed from the brown rice. Apparently that's where most of the nutrients are.

As an example - in a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, they found that replacing white rice with brown rice reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 16%.

    50 Athletes Over 50

This is a great new book written by Don McGrath, PhD, in which he interviews 50 people over the age of 50 who have maintained or developed incredible levels of fitness after the age of 50. I had a chance to preview this book before it came out in March. It is truly inspiring. And, it shows what can be done by people of any age if they put their minds to it. The regular price is $29.95, but it is being offered right now for $24.95. Or you can get it for the Kindle for $9.95.

    Buy.com

This site really has little to do with fitness or nutrition, but it is one of my favorite sites. They carry everything from electronics to books. Their prices are some of the most competitive on the internet, and they often offer free shipping. If I am looking to buy almost anything, I check them out first. This link is only for US and Canadian buyers.

    Buy.com

    Identity Theft

I don’t know about you, but with all the news coverage lately about identity theft and all the problems it can cause for people, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about shredding any mail we get with any kind of identifying info in it, and she freaks out any time I order something on the internet and give out info there.

Well, a woman I know here in Arizona recently sent me some info about a company that offers $1,ooo,ooo coverage to help take care of the problem if someone steals your identity. The company is called LifeLock. You can get to their site by clicking on the banner below if it's visable, or by copying the following code into your browser –

They charge a very reasonable monthly fee and offer a number of included services (they also give discounts for paying annually). Go take a look and see what you think. I signed up. I think my peace of mind is worth that kind of money.
