The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan - What You Need To Know

The Basics

The Cabbage Soup diet is a diet designed for quick weight loss (not fat loss). It is severely restricted in calories and nutrients. The diet is designed only for 7-14 days. It is not a diet that helps people change their eating habits and food choices.

Things to Eat

This is a very low calorie, low fat diet based on cabbage soup, plus a few other foods, including vegetables, fruits and restricted carbs and protein. The soup itself is usually made from: 3 onions, 1 head of celery, 1 green bell pepper, half a cabbage, 2 tins of tomatoes, 1 pack of onion soup mix and 3 pints of vegetable stock. On specific days you can eat a baked potatoe, unlimited fruits, lean beef or chicken, lots of bananas, or some skim milk (but you can't eat these things together). The only thing you can eat every day is the cabbage soup, in unlimited quantities.

They Claim It Works Because . . .

The cabbage soup itself has fat burning properties and the diet is low in calories.

Some Opinions I Found

The ingredients of the cabbage soup diet, in themselves, are mostly healthy - though if stock is used as well as soup mix the finished soup could be quite high in salt. Overall the cabbage diet is deficient in protein, carbohydrate and essential fats.

Many are attracted to this short-term "quick fix" diet to lose weight quickly. It is not a solution to a healthy, long term eating plan.

This diet regime requires a lot of planning and frequent shopping trips for the supply of vegetables and fruit. For many people it will involve cooking and eating separately from other family members not following this eating regime.

In the short term most people would lose weight very quickly. However, the loss of weight will come from loss of water and muscle tissue not from fat reserves. The combination of foods "allowed" would force most people to nearly starve each day.

My Thoughts

This diet may be acceptable if you want a 7-day break from junk food, if you have only a little weight to lose or you only want quick weight loss. But be aware that it is not nutritionally based and should not be followed long-term. It will not help you learn to eat properly and it can be tough to stick with it even for seven days.
