The Grapefruit Diet Plan - What You Need To Know

The Basics

The grapefruit diet is another fad diet, based on the fat-burning properties of grapefruit, although there is no hard evidence of that.

The grapefruit diet will work for most people since it eliminates in between meal snacks and basic junk foods all while leaving in a few items such as bacon and salad dressings. 

Things to Eat

Permitted foods: most meats, red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cereal, corn, starchy vegetables, leaf spinach, pasta, corn chips, jelly or jam, sweet pickles, pretzels, low-fat, fat free or diet salad dressings.

Forbidden foods: white onion, green onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cucumbers, carrots, potato chips, cabbage, green beans, lettuce, chili, mayonnaise, hot dogs.

They Claim It Works Because . . .

The grapefruit concept itself comes from the reported enzymatic response which aids digestion of other foods when consuming grapefruit just prior. 

Some Opinions I Found

The grapefruit diet works in the sense that a great deal of weight is lost, but this is mainly due to calorie restriction.

This is a very restrictive, frustrating diet. Its lack of variety deprives the body of calcium, iron and vitamins. Besides being monotonous, it is also unhealthy.

This diet, like many others is based on weaving a fine bit of creativity around the simple rules of not eating a bunch of junk throughout the day. All in all it is a good idea and the creators were crafty in the way they assembled the plan. There seems to be no real downside to this diet since it maintains adequate levels of fat, carbohydrate, and protein.

My Thoughts

As is always the case for me, I say - beware of any diet that is based primarily on the "magic" properties of one food.

It looks like this diet will work, but I think that's the case more because of the restriction of foods, rather than the wonderful qualities of the grapefruit. And don't forget the boredom factor. By restricting the foods you can and can't eat, this diet will probably get old quickly.

Also, this is not the type of plan that will teach you healthy eating habits that you can use for the rest of your life.
